Canvas

Summary

Canvas, a startup based in San Francisco, backed by Sequoia, hired me as a product designer to work on UI/UX design of a web app which makes it easy for anyone to create a dashboard which shows data in charts/graphs and tables, focusing on helping companies understand their business by connecting 150+ apps and databases to get the data and insights they need.

Design process

I made improvements to all parts of the app and showed them to CEO of Canvas every 1-2 days to review and discuss next steps. I tried to make the app easier to use and look better, and include all the necessary features and capabilities to help the user create and use dashboards which show exactly the data they need to see.

Old design

This was Canvas product design before I started redesigning it. Some of the main problems were that it looked outdated, it was not easy to figure out how to use and what's possible to do with it, and it was not possible to quickly move from one dashboard to another — user had to click 3-4 times just to go to another dashboard.

New design

A few mockups from my redesign of Canvas product. To make it easy to go from one dashboard to another, CEO of Canvas suggested making it similar to Notion, where user can click on each dashboard in a sidebar to be able to go to another dashboard in 1 click. Overall, I focused on making it easy for users to create, find and use dashboards, and made it visually more simple and minimal so user can focus on data and insights rather than having the UI get in the way of what they want to do and distract them.

Design system

I created a Canvas Design System which includes all the foundations (colors, typography, icons, etc.) and components (buttons, form fields, etc.) which developers need to build the product based on the new design.

Results

After changes were implemented, Canvas became #1 product of the month on ProductHunt.

"Adis acted as a true founding designer on our team. He needs very little direction, and I have honestly never met anyone this proactive, productive, and pragmatic at the same time. He has a real knack for UX design, and seeing user problems before they occur.

He's basically the startup CEO's dream. He redesigned the v2 of our app from the ground up, knowing exactly what to redo, as if he was an expert in our domain (data analytics). We received raving reviews of the redesign from both existing and new users, and I believe it was instrumental in us getting #1 on Product Hunt."
